Northwest Airlines stated in an announcement this week that it plans to add 43,000 seats during the winter vacation season.

The carrier's decision comes as airlines throughout the country are boosting their seat offerings.

The airline said it will add seats between its main hubs, Detroit, Minneapolis/St. Paul and Memphis, Tenn., as well as Anchorage, Alaska, and destinations in Hawaii, Mexico and the Caribbean. The airline's seat count in those markets will now exceed 500,000, marking an increase of 9 percent over last year.
