Kawaiahao Church is marking 10 years in the Japanese wedding service by upgrading its operation. A new wedding office got a Hawaiian blessing Sunday.
"The opening of the new wedding facility is a fitting way to celebrate more than 10 years of successful wedding services," said Rev. Karen Wright, director of the church's Royal Wedding Center. "During this time more than 12,000 weddings were performed."
The historic church said 11,760 of those weddings were for Japanese couples.
The new wedding facility is a 720 square foot structure to house the wedding director's office, a consultation room for ministers to meet with the bride and groom, and a dressing room for couples preparing for ceremonies in the nearby church sanctuary.
The center has a video system that drives a closed-circuit video monitor showing the ceremonies taking place in the sanctuary. It also allows ceremonies to be streamed online. Video of the ceremony can be reviewed and captured digitally.
Future phases of a multipurpose center project will add office space, classrooms, a conference room, a new social hall, and a kitchen.
The design and construction team for the new wedding facility includes the architectural firm Franklin Wong and Associates, landscape architect Doug Salisbury, and general contractor S&M Sakamoto.
